Nominations are invited for the forthcoming Pride in Handsworth Awards to be held in May. Who do you think is giving to the neighbourhood, who should we recognise for their achievements? There are 13 categories to choose from, all below, and the you can download the application for by clicking here.
Closing date for nominations is the 2nd April 2010 at 5pm and I would love to hear from you about people you know in Handsworth.
1. Child of Courage
This award is for a courageous child or young person up to the age of 18. Do you know
of someone who is a shining example, who has overcome adversity, disability or done
something remarkable for someone else?
2. Young Person of the Year
This is for someone under 21 who has either, achieved great things in sport, represented
their school, is involved in volunteer work, or achieved distinction in some other field.
3. Active Citizen Award
The aim of this award is to recognise active citizenship by young people. Judges will be
look for brilliant young citizens who are working for the benefit of their schools, community,
country and world.
4. The Safer Community Award
Nominees can include individuals or teams working in community support roles (such as
PCSO’s or parish and street wardens) or members of the public or groups who have acted to
tackle crime, disorder or anti social behavior.
5. Adult of the Year
Someone over the age of 21 who still strives and continues to achieve great things at work, in
their profession, in the field of sport, or a hobby or pastime.
6. Golden Citizen Award
The aim of this award is to recognise active citizenship by older people.
Judges will be looking for an older person over 60 year old who has worked or
made an outstanding contribution for the benefit of their local, community, country
and world
7. Hands on Handsworth Environment Award
For an individual or group whose efforts have significantly improved their
community’s environment. Judges will be looking for a positive impact, for
example by litter picking, enhancing an area or reducing our carbon footprint.
8. Hands on Handsworth Green Business & Service Award
For a business or local service whose efforts have significantly improved their
community’s environment. Judges will be looking for a positive impact, for
example by litter picking, enhancing an area or reducing our carbon footprint,
recycling scheme, allotment scheme, community garden, cycle to work or school.
9. Living in Faith Award
We have many different faiths in Handsworth. This award is for an individual or
group who have working positively in the community. For example, a multi-faith
initiative or a singular faith, offering a service to the community as a whole.
10. Be Healthy Award
This is award is for an individual, group or organisation that has made a positive
contribution towards improving the health of residents and the local community
(include physical health, disability and mental health).
11. Services to Community Award
This award will be presented in recognition of the efforts of an individual, an
unsung hero in our midst, who devotes their spare time to working within the
community on behalf of others. This could be someone who established a local
sports club; a local fund raising scene; or someone who goes out of their way to
help elderly.
12. Business Award
This award is for an individual person or local business that has shown innovation
and/or made a significant contribution to the local business economy.
13. Arts & Culture award
This award is for an individual or group that have dedicated time to a project which
demonstrates originality, shows purpose within the community and has had a
positive impact in their area.
