About me – Catherine M
Hi I’m Catherine, I am 17 years old and a local Handsworth resident. I have lived in the community for 11 years now, I was born in Zimbabwe and have grown up here in Birmingham. I may be young but I have tremendous passion and a love for where I live. I represent young people in Ladywood + Perry Barr in my role as a Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) in the Untied Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP). My work has allowed me to amplify the voices of young people in my area on a national platform. I had the pleasure of meeting MP’s like, Vince Cable, Sir Albert Bore and Mr Speaker, John Bercow. This Novemeber, I will have the privilege of debating with 250 other MYP’s in the House of Commons. This will be a very monumental achievement for me and my community.
Since the age of 14 I have been part of the Birmingham Leadership Foundation, they have given me the tools and the foundation to grow as a young person into a young leader in my community. I always get inspired by their annual speakers at their MondayMasterclass events. I will keep you updated on their upcoming events.
I am currently studying: English Literature, Psychology and Geography at Handsworth Grammar School Sixth Form, where I represent students in the school community as Head Girl and a School council representative.
God has blessed my 2013 in so many ways, most notably in May at the age of 16, I was a finalist in the Birmingham Future category of Aspiring Talent. This was an amazing opportunity to meet so many influential businessmen and women our city has produced. Even though I did not win the award, it was a great experience and opportunity to be inspired by other very talented people.
I understand that Handsworth is a community that has it’s problems, but my desire to change my community has made me very independent and realise that, in the words of Ghandi, I have to be the change I want to see in my community.
So I hope you have learned a bit about me and as well as blog, what else I am passionate about 😀
