Calling Women in Handsworth – You are Invited to Join “The IN Thing”

Women in the Handsworth area are being urged to put a new slant on the saying ‘charity begins at home’ by joining “The IN Thing” this autumn.

Cancer Research UK is launching an exciting fundraising campaign, known as The IN Thing, and is urging women in the area to sign up for their free pary pack as soon as possible. The IN Thing asks women to rally their girlfriends together for a fun night in and to donate the money they would have spent on a  night out to life-saving research.

Think about the different things that you could do like  spending a night in watching your favourite movie, having a clothes swap, singing karaoke, dancing the night away or just having a catch up with the girls!

The In Thing is launching now to give hosts time to register for their free party packs, invite friends and get ready to host your get together to host the gathering in November.

Future Leaders Invited to Get on Board

Get on Board, an accredited programme, which prepares Birmingham’s promising young leaders for the responsibilities of the boardroom, is currently seeking applicants for its 2013 / 14 programme.

Run in partnership between Birmingham Leadership Foundation  (BLF)  the Governance Forum, Get on Board specifically targets young undiscovered talent that is currently under represented in boardrooms and leadership positions. Participants are taught the essentials of corporate governance through mentoring, board observations and visits to high profile city events.

Former course graduates include, Justice Williams MBE, Cosmopolitan magazine’s 2009 Woman of the Year; Anthony McCourt Birmingham Leadership Foundation Chair and former Director of The Cube; and ex Handsworth gang member turned author, Errol Lawson. Since 2011, over 60 successful graduates have been awarded with membership of the Association of Corporate Governance Practioners (ACGP) and are now sitting in the boardrooms of local organisations such as The Drum, Nehemiah Housing and national environmental charity Groundwork.

Karl George, Programme Tutor and Founder of the Governance Forum says:

“It is recognised that too few people who are from inner city communities or work in grass routes organisations could benefit from the undiscovered talent which exists within the city’s young population. Get on Board, along with  the support of BLF, aims to address this gap by supporting young adults who may be lacking in governance expertise but have the passion and potential to succeed in the boardroom.”

Mashkura Begum, Executive Director of Birmingham Leadership Foundation says:

“As a charity Birmingham Leadership Foundation is passionate in ensuring that opportunities, such as Get on Board, are made available to under the radar talent which often goes unnoticed by the City’s mainstream leadership. Get on Board is free of cost to participants and plays a vital role in addressing a lack of diversity commonly found in the boardroom.”

Your Views Count!

You are invited to come along to your local Neighbourhood dialogue event to help develop a strategy that identifies improvements at a neighbourhood level. It is vital that residents and agencies are engaged in the process so please come along and make your views count. The idea is to create a vibrant energy that encourages dialogue and joint action with local residents, businesses, investors and service providers on the needs, opportunities and priorities in each of the city’s neighbourhoods.

For the Handsworth area your nearest dialogue event is to be held on Saturday 3rd August 2013 from 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. in the Community Room at Laurel Road Community Centre, Laurel Road, Handsworth, B21 9PB. Football Taster Sessions

  • Wednesday 21st August (Ages 17 – 18)

Summer Holiday Activities in Handsworth

Stuck for something to do with the children over the Summer holidays? Then it might be worth taking a look at the activities listed below:-

  • Handsworth Park playday on Wednesday 7th August from 12.00 midday – 4.00 p.m. for children age 5 – 13 years. This event is FREE and offers fun, child led activities. A team of playworkers will be situated in the park with play equipment.

     

  • Soho House Musuem, Soho Avenue, B18 5LB – come along and join in various craft activities running every Friday from 26th July to 30th August from 1.00 p.m. – 3.00 p.m. This is suitable for all ages although if your child has disabilities please call (0121) 554 9122 for further information.   • Summer Family Big Brum History Buz – come and join a fun filled family day onboard the Big Brum Buz. This is an opportunity to travel the city and see some of our historic gems with a child friendly tour. There will be singing and quizzes and trails and a warm welcome at the Heritage Sites. The event is running on Friday 9th August and Friday 23rd August. The open top bus tour will leave Visctoria Square, Birmingham at 11.30 a.m. and will call at Sarehole Mill and Sosho House. Tickets are £8 for adults and free for children. Entry at Sarehole and Soho is included in the ticket price. The bus will arrive back at Victoria Square at 4.00 p.m. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note that you can bring picnics but refreshments area available at the sites.       

Summer Holiday Playschemes in Handsworth

Over the Summer Holidays there are a number of local holiday playschemes in the Handsworth area:

  • D’vine Chance Kidz Playscheme at Laurel Road Community and Sports Centre, B24 9PB. This sports and activities programme is for children age 3 -14 and will take place between Monday 29th July – Friday 23rd August from 9.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. The cost is £57.00 per week and all children must be registered at Laurel Road Community and Sports Centre.   • Hanstead Hall Inclusion Programme at Hamstead Hall School, Craythorne Avenue, B20 1HL. The scheme includes sports, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, drama, dance, cookery and bike riding. This will take place between Wednesday 24th July – Saturday 31st August from 10.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. for children age 5 – 16.   • Handsworth Playscheme, Handsworth Playcentre, Grove Lane, B20 2HF. The scheme includes arts, sports, tabletop games, dressing – up and use of Hnadsworth park. This will take place between Wednesday 24th July – Friday 23rd August from 8.30 a.m. – 5.30 p.m. for children age 5 – 13. This scheme may cater for children with disabilities.   • Seven Up Playscheme – This playscheme takes place at Hamilton School on 6th, 7th and 8th August and moves to Rookery Childrens Centre, Rookery Road on the 13th, 14th,15th, 20th, 21st and 22nd August from 10.30 a.m. – 1.30 p.m. This scheme is for children age 8 – 11 and can cater for children with disabilities.   • Handsworth Playscheme, Handsworth Seventh Day Adeventist Church, Hutton Road, B20 3RD runs from Monday 29th July – Friday 2nd August from 9.30 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. for children age 5 – 11. Handsworth Job Fair

A Job Fair will take place on Wednesday 19th June from 10.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. at the Handsworth Campus (Soho Road) of South and City College, Birmingham. The event has been organised by Councillor Waseem Zaffar, Lozells and East Handsworth Ward with the Department of Work & Pensions (Handsworth Job Centre Plus), East Birmingham  Community Forum and South & City College Birmingham.

This is a great opportunity for local residents as over 20 employers will be in attendance recruiting for over 100 current vacancies.

Launch of Lozells and Handsworth Heritage Trail

Legacy West Midlands received Heritage Lottery Funding to develop a Heritage Trail in Lozells and East Handsworth ward. On Saturday 25th May this all comes to fruition with the launch of Lozells and East Handsworth Heritage Trail . Registration will start at 9.30 a.m. at Soho House, Soho Avenue, off Soho Road, B18 5LB. The tour will take up to two hours and will include historical landmarks like St Mary’s Convent and St Mary’s Church where Matthew Boulton, Jomes Watt and William Murdoch are buried.

At 1.00 p.m. after the walk there will be a reception at . at South and City College, Soho Campus, Soho Road. Working with South and City College 20 passionate people have  been trained to become ‘tour guides’. They will be the tour guides and will share their knowledge of the area on the walk.

Lozells, Birchfield and Handsworth Community Fund

The Lozells, Birchfield and Handsworth Community First Matched Fund has been allocated £67,820 to award in small grants between 2011 and 2015. Community First introduces a new approach to funding projects – leveraging time, money and other resources – helping neighbourhoods play a leading role in regenerating their area.

The outcomes that Community First will acieve are:-

  • Communities being able to help themselves and others.
  • Neighbourhood groups that are better able to express their needs and influence decisions made about that community.
  • Neighbourhood groups that are better able to take control of resources needed to make a difference – enhancing confidence, capability and partnership.

Grants of up to £1,500 are available for activities and projects in three priority areas:-

  • Advice Services
  • Young People / NEET
  • Health and well – being
